The Antioxidant Miracle
![]()
Antioxidants are a group of compounds that are produced
by the body and that occur naturally in many foods. Antioxidants work together in the body to
maintain our health and vigor well into our later years. They do this by protecting our cells and
tissues from damage caused by free radicals.
The body produces free radicals in the normal course of energy
production but there are also substances in our environment, such as, certain
chemicals, smoke, pollutants, solar radiation that trigger the production of
free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage cell
structures and ultimately lead to cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease,
Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, cataracts, arthritis, and many other ailments
associated with aging can be aggravated by free radicals. Free radicals perform
many critical functions in our bodies, from controlling the flow of blood
through our arteries, to fighting infection and they keep our brains sharp and
in focus. A key to good health and in slowing down the aging process would be
to maintain a healthy balance between antioxidants and free radicals. That is the job of the body’s antioxidant
defense network.
Lipoic Acid
·
Powerful
protection against aging: stroke, heart disease, and cataracts.
·
Boosts
the entire antioxidant network, strengthens memory, slows aging
·
Used
in Europe to prevent and relieve complications of diabetes
·
The Packer Plan: 100 mg daily (50 mg
in am and 50 mg in pm)
Vitamin
E
·
Protects
skin against damage from UV radiation and ozone.

Reduces
the risk of prostate cancer and inhibits growth of breast cancer cells
·
Helps
save your vision and enhances immune function
·
The Packer Plan: 500 milligrams daily of mixed tocopherols and
tocotrienols.
Vitamin C
·
Prevents
cancer by shielding DNA from free radical damage
·
Protects
sperm from free radical damage.
·
Regenerates
vitamin E and interacts with flavonoid antioxidants in the network.
·
Critical
for a well-functioning immune system and may reduce the length and severity of
colds, viruses. Bolsters the body’s ability to resist cancer.
·
Essential
for production of collagen, the cellular glue that holds the body together and
keeps skin young and supple.
·
Works
with E to prevent the oxidation of lipoproteins that can lead to heart disease.
·
Protects
against cataracts.
·
The Packer Plan:
500 mg daily of ester C (250 mg A.M. and 250 mg P.M.)
Coenzyme Q10
·
Regenerates
E in the antioxidant network.
·
Used
successfully in Japan to treat and prevent heart disease.
·
Rejuvenates
brain cells and may help to prevent Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
·
Currently
being studied as a treatment for advanced breast cancer.
·
Used
to treat gum disease.
·
The Packer Plan:
30 mg daily as part of the basic plan.
An additional 50 mg daily for people at high risk of heart disease or
stroke.
Glutathione
·
Low
levels are a harbinger to illness and premature death.
·
Produced
in the body, is the primary water-soluble antioxidant. Recycles the oxidized
form of C restoring its antioxidant power.
·
Levels
boosted by lipoic acid.
·
Instrumental
in the detoxification of drugs, pollutants and for healthy liver function.
·
Important
for strong immune system, can reduce age related slump in system.
·
Involved
in storage and transport of amino acids
·
The Packer Plan: Boost by taking 100 mg of lipoic
acid daily.
Network Boosters
Flavonoids
·
Improve
memory, concentration and used to treat ADD.
·
Can
boost the effectiveness of C.
·
Regulate
nitric acid
·
Keep
the heart healthy by preventing blood clots, protect against oxidation of LDL
cholesterol, and lower high blood pressure.
·
Improve
sexual function in men
·
Reduce
inflammation and boost immune function.
·
The Packer Plan:
Ginkgo Biloba: 30 mg daily; Pycnogenol: 20 mg daily.
Carotenoids
·
Increased
intake can offer protection against many types of cancer.
·
Decreases
risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.
·
Can
boost immune function in older people.
·
A diet rich in Carotenoids may reduce risk of
heart disease.
·
The Packer Plan: Most can get all that is needed from diet.
·
Caution: Smokers should not take any carotenoids
supplements but should eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
Selenium
·
Works
in synergy with E
·
Protects
against many forms of cancer, including lung, prostate, and colon cancer.
·
People
living in areas of depleted soils are at higher risk for dying from stroke or
heart disease.
·
