Is the current regulation of the food industry really protecting us?

In the future I can say with certainty there will be an even greater discomfort and more disease due to the "Genetically Modified
Organisms" (GMO).  GMO food, also known as,
"genetically engineered," has been in practice for over a decade now.   Other
countries require food labeling so consumers have a choice, but in our country the FDA has decided we don't need to know,
and does not require GMO labeling.  GMO foods are creating new species from those that could not cross natural boundaries,
such as fish and  corn.  Whole foods cannot be patented because they are natural, so Monsanto is designing their own
creation of seeds that go beyond the realm of nature and what is natural to our bodies.

To create GMO crops, genes from bacteria, viruses, plants, animals, and even humans, have already been inserted into our
common food crops, like corn, soy, and canola. Now the biotech industry has taken aim at our sugar.

At the request of Monsanto, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency increased the allowable amount of glyphosate residues
on sugar beet roots by a whopping 5000%.  Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, sugar is extracted from the beet’s
root.  The inevitable result is more glyphosate pesticide in our sugar.  Another very good reason to eliminate sugar from the
diet.

Does it really matter what kind of food we eat?

Yes, it does matter what we eat.  Our bodies use food for energy and that energy needs to be maintained.  One of the sources
for energy is the nutrients (minerals) we get from our food.  Every single item we choose to ingest affects our chemistry
positively or negatively.  The change may not be evident for a while because the human body diligently works to make the
necessary corrections on a continual basis.  However, over time if junk is continually put in, then junk will be put out, that is just
the way it is.  If our bodies are maintained and kept well with the proper minerals (nutrients)  then the occasional indulgence will
not cause a permanent crisis, keyword, "occasional."

Let me share a personal experience with you, about a month before the holidays  Kirk (my husband) and I had been eating a
very clean diet of organic vegetables, mostly the green leafy variety, and had eliminated most all sugars and starches from our
diet.  Kirk was dropping weight, his blood pressure was coming down and we both felt wonderful, then Thanksgiving happened!
We gorged ourselves on all the wonderful holiday "goodies."  We ate the dressing, potatoes, dinner rolls, corn, pie's, cookies,
squash etc.  We woke up the following morning with "hangovers."   All the sugar and starch left us with a feeling of having been
out all night indulging in the spirits.  My legs and feet even hurt when I got out of bed.  Sugar and starch are key components to
aching legs and feet.

Reducing sugar, starch, and salt are important to managing health naturally.    If you read labels you will discover that sugar is
in everything, products that you wouldn't think "need" it, makes you wonder, "why."   Sugar is addictive, could it be that sugar is
deliberately put in all processed foods to establish an addiction so the consumer will continue to purchase the product?

Do we really need to eat organics?

Yes, we do need to strive to eat organics whenever possible.  The best way to assure the food is organic is to purchase from
local farms.  Several areas have
community supported agricultural (CSA) programs.  This is a program where you can establish
a relationship with a local farm and buy shares in their crops.   It is an excellent way to get fresh, organic vegetables and
support your local community as well.   We live in an age when we can no longer depend on big industry to provide us with the
necessary nutrients we need to have good health.  We need to take responsibility for our own health and look for alternative
markets to purchase the most wholesome food products available..  A return to the backyard garden is another option as well if
you have the space and time.   Now you might say, "i can't afford organics," that's not true because when you start eating
organically your body's nutrition is increased so you are satisfied much quicker.  The food tastes better and you require less.
Organics do perish faster so they need to be purchased more often and used within a couple days of purchase.  I would much
rather eat something I know is going to spoil in a couple days than something that could set for months and not spoil.   The
food that will spoil in a couple of days is alive and wholesome, just what the body needs and can best absorb!

Check back occasionally,  because as time permits I will add pages that will talk more about particular whole foods and the
value to the body in terms of nutrition.
"We should eat to live... Not live to eat" ...  I can't remember where
I read this because it was a few years back, but it left a lasting impact
on my life.
(update: Ben Franklin is the author of the above quote)

If one takes a look at the American diet today it doesn't take a rocket
scientist to figure out why obesity and disease is rising.

Food is our fuel for energy, and it is important for nutrition,
unfortunately proper nutrition isn't a priority for most  because eating is
associated with "pleasure."    We all have our comfort foods and for me
its chocolate! (dark chocolate)
I believe in moderation not deprivation.  Most of the foods we like would
be fine occasionally if our bodies were properly nourished with
wholesome healthy foods. It only takes six days for something bad we
eat to leave our system, so the occasional treat would not be a
problem, moderation is the key, but unfortunately this is not the case in
the western diet these days.  Our foods are processed to the point that
they are no longer living fuel providing our bodies with the energy to
repair themselves.  One of the very first steps to begin managing
health naturally is to begin to change dietary habits. One day at a time,
one food at a time.  I started with bread, switching from glue (white) to
whole grain.  It was difficult at first, but now eating white bread is like
eating "paper mache." and on the rare occasions I do indulge it plugs
the elimination channel big time!
